DANA GENSHAFT was born in Moscow and trained at the School of American Ballet, the Kirov Academy of Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet School before joining San Francisco Ballet in 2000, where she was promoted to soloist in 2008. She joined the San Francisco Ballet School faculty in 2015 and was selected for the New York Choreographic Institute in 2016, the same year she joined SFDanceworks’ inaugural season. Her solo Portrait has since been adapted to film and screened at festivals worldwide, and her choreography appears in George Harrison’s “What Is Life” music video. Her commissions include the Washington Ballet, Ballet Met, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Idaho, and ABT Studio Company, and she received the 2018 Princess Grace Award for choreography. She became SFDanceworks’ Artistic Director in Fall 2022.

I dropped the list of choreographers in her repertory and the venues where her work has been seen (Fall for Dance, Guggenheim Works & Process, Marquee TV). If you want a shorter version, I can cut down the commissions list, or I can restore any of the cuts. Also, “Nuemier” in the original is a typo for Neumeier, in case you use the full version elsewhere.

BRETT CONWAY is a San Francisco–based performer, choreographer, and educator. A former dancer with Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater, he has also performed with SFDanceworks and San Francisco Opera.

Brett made his professional choreographic debut with The Bedroom for SFDanceworks in 2019 and later served as the company’s co-artistic director. His choreography includes works for SFDanceworks, the LINES Ballet BFA and Training Programs, and the Merola Opera Program’s 2026 production of Ariadne auf Naxos. He also stages Danielle Rowe’s For Pixie, created on him for SFDanceworks, for companies including San Francisco Ballet, Ballet Idaho, and Oregon Ballet Theatre.

An educator and mentor since 2017, Brett teaches at the LINES Ballet BFA and Summer Programs and The Training Ground SF, as well as company and community classes for LINES Ballet, ODC/Dance, and Smuin Contemporary Ballet.

ISAAC BATES-VINUEZA is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher who lives and works in San Francisco. As a performer, Isaac has danced with the Sacramento Ballet, SFDanceworks, Post:ballet, Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, and LED Boise. He’s worked with artists like Bryan Arias, Rena Butler, Lauren Edson, Jodie Gates, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Laura O’Malley, Mosceleyne ParkeHarrison, Penny Saunders, and Amy Seiwert. Isaac made his professional choreographic debut with Sacramento Ballet in 2022, and that same year, he was awarded the Ann and Weston Hicks Choreography Fellowship at Jacob’s Pillow. He is an alumnus of Pacific Northwest Ballet School and holds a B.A. in English from UC Berkeley.

OPEN COMPANY CLASS with Nat Wilson

We’re back next week!

Join us for our first week of open company class: @foco_technique with Nat Wilson.

Pricing: $15 | Open Level | Duration: 60 minutes

Location

Alonzo King Lines Ballet

26 7th St, 5th Floor San Francisco, CA 94103

FoCo Technique is an original and evolving dance vocabulary created by choreographer and artistic director of YYDC, Yue Yin. Echoing her choreographic voice, the technique is a unique contemporary form of dance movement rooted in Chinese classical and folk dance, melded with the complex and diverse influences of the immigrant experience. The form grows from Yin’s own blended international background and a deep appreciation for precision, contrast, fluidity, and musicality.

Nat Wilson (they/he) is one of only two dancers certified to teach FoCo Technique, and they bring to the technique the passionate physicality and honesty they developed previously in their career, most notably while dancing with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and ate9 Dance Company. Their teaching style is as rigorous as it is encouraging, with a focus on empowering participants to break the barriers between themselves and the dancers they wish to be.
